Weird foods

Ever wonder what kind of food to try and what food to stay away from when you're visiting a new country? Here you'll find a short list of some interesting Norwegian foods you should try (or not)

Lutefisk
Lutefisk is stockfish of cod that has been soaked in water, lye, and then watered out again. Lye makes the bacteria in the fish die, and with this we can have the fish for a long time. This process takes place over a long period of time, and traditionally the fish is ready for Christmas. The fish is served with accessories such as bacon, potatoes, sauce, mashed peas, goat cheese and syrup, and with aquavit or a beer on the side. It can also be served in a soft lefse with butter, salt and pepper as the only accessory.

Rømmegrøt
This is a incredibly rich sour cream porridge. Traditionally it's eaten with a dash of butter on top and some sugar. Rømmegrøt is usually eaten alongside local cured ham made from lamb, as well as other types of meats such as salamis. A type of thin Norwegian flat bread is a "must have" on the side when eating Rømmegrøt and cured ham.

Juniper berries
Juniper berries are berries that come from a species of conifers, and therefore, in foods and drinks, the berries give off a distinctive taste. The berries are widely used in Scandinavian food traditions, and often in game dishes and in drinks such as beer and aquavit, but they can also be used in the typical Scandinavian tobacco - snus. This is a taste that can be seen as something "exotic", but is also often the definition of exclusive dishes and drinks.

Smalahove
This unusual dish consists of a sheep's head which is divided into two halves, which are cleaned of brain mass and such. Eyes, teeth and skin are retained. The head should be cooked until the meat loosens from the jaw bone. The dish is served with turnips and boiled potatoes, and preferably with a beer and aquavit. Enjoy!

Multekrem
A very simple and tasty dessert from Norway. Usually it's eaten in late summer when the first cloudberries are ripe. It's basically well sugared cloudberries in whipped cream made out of heavy cream. It's surprisingly light, and a perfect dessert for late summer evenings.
